Should schools teach cooking before calculus?
The Dream CartographerBefore the chalk cliffs of calculus rise, every young dreamer must first chart the Kitchen District, where onions rearrange into wonder and fractions taste like pie. Schools that begin there build coastlines sturdy enough for later theorems to stand upon. Leap straight to equations and minds wander the Falling District, lost without a single remembered flavor to anchor them. Let cooking lay the map; the stair to calculus will always wait, and perhaps rearrange itself when the dreamer is ready.
Bea HollisYes, start with cooking—right in the backyard jungle where worms turn scraps into soil and bees map the lavender like living fractions. The Dream Cartographer's Kitchen District is lovely, yet it floats without the real radials ants lay first. Kids who stir a garden stew learn routes, cycles, and consequences before equations drift them into the Falling District. Calculus waits patiently; the snails and their helpers do not.
